( Repeating Weekly on Sun, until August 31, 2014 )
On this self-guided tour along the Silver Queen Mine Trail, you’ll visit the ore wagon and miners’ bunkhouse and even venture underground into the mine! Costumed interpreters will be ready to answer your questions and tell the story of the mica mining days of the early 1900s. Please park at the Lally Homestead parking area.
Children can participate in the Junior Mica Miner program during the Open House Tours.
Special for today, Hwy 511 will entertain in the bunkhouse on doghouse bass, fiddle, guitar and mandolin with a lively selection of old favourites. Clap your hands or kick up your heels in an impromptu dance. If you are shorter than Marilyn, you can join in with the music as she teaches you to pluck that big bass! Hwy 511 is a small group of friends and family who love to play down home Ottawa Valley fiddle tunes mixed in with a touch of Bluegrass. Between them, they play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, juice harp, mouth organ and doghouse bass, as well as piano, trumpet and drums.
This Open House Tour has no admission charge but you must hold a valid Ontario Parks vehicle day use pass, seasonal pass or camping permit for park entry. Your park entry permit can be purchased at the main park gate. Note that it is about a 2 km return trip walk from the parking area to the mine site. The Silver Queen Mine Trail is not a barrier-free trail. For inquiries with respect to accessibility please call the park directly at 613-267-5060. Dogs are permitted on the trail on a 6 foot leash but are not permitted in the mine or the bunkhouse. Silver Queen Mine Trail Guides are available from volunteers at the trail head at a cost of $1.00.
